In stick bags we carry things like drumsticks, soft and hard mallets, brushes, blastix, drum keys , and other assorted odds and ends. Reading Sheet Music Can Save Your Life . . .

T here are several good reasons for Drummers to learn to read sheet music. This story illustrates one good reason. Here is a story from my own experience. " I remember a time back in the Mid 1980s when I was working with the rhythm section for a group famous from the 1950s, called The Diamonds , and as back up players, we were also hired to support The Platters another famous vocal group from the 1950s on a 10-day tour of the Pacific Northwest." The Platters were supposed to show up a day before the tour to rehearse with the band for the show. But, because of transportation issues, the Platters didn't arrive until just about a half hour before show time. We were opening the tour that night at a college in Southern Oregon. Words of Wisdom I have followed.

Many people are familiar with the poem Desiderata . Many years ago, I became aware of these words when transitioning from a child to a young adult. They are words of wisdom, a survival guide, if you will. I have tried to live my life guided by these words, among many others, but these few have been more or less a constant focus for me amidst all the changes that life brings along the way. I love these words. There appears to be some debate and discussion over when and where they were first discovered and who actually wrote them. This 1952 version by Max Ehrmann is just one of the many I have found. Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
